{great granddaughter joy}
My parents are taking a well-deserved vacation, so I'm helping out with my grandmother for a few days. She takes such joy in Kate!  The munchkin was so sweet climbing in and out of Grandmother's lap, and Kirby used her feet for a pillow. She felt loved.

Kate has a new room! We moved her to the next bedroom down the hall upstairs. It shares an adjoining bathroom with her old room (Caroline's nursery). I LOVE the results. The color on the walls (similar to the light blue/green in the blog design) is so soothing and compliments the dark furniture well. The details are old-fashioned (just like before), which makes sense since we just moved her bedding and a lot of her accessories over. Now the pink nursery is looking a little bare (accessory-wise) at the moment, but I don't think it'll take much to get it ready for baby Caroline.

The funny thing is, I think Kate really loves her new room, too. It took her a few days to get used to going to sleep in there, but she's gotten back to her regular easy-to-put-to-bed self over the last couple of days. She really enjoys being in there!

This is just a smattering of a few shots. To see more, scroll down to the Flickr slideshow.

{rockabye baby}
I'm so glad I had my camera ready right at this moment. I was taking pictures of Kate's new room (stay tuned for another post) while Kate played. She pulled out her doll, put it on the rocking chair, and started rocking it back and forth. It was definitely a "NO WAY she's doing that!" kind of moment... her first evident pretend play. It gives me a glimmer of hope for this soon-to-be big sister and the real baby girl who's about to join our family.

{puppy love}
Kate was on the fussy side this morning (she's getting a cold), so I turned on Air Buddies to help press her "reset" button. She spent the first several minutes yelling "DA" (translation: "dog") at the computer, but then she settled into quietly watching. I think she watched it for a good 15 minutes. Surely that's a record for Kate!

{mother's day out}
I've been pretty worn out lately. Nick's been out of town a lot, and what with being 30+ weeks pregnant and overly-emotional, I needed a day off! My sweet mom could see this, and she offered to watch Kate while I spent the day sans toddler. I did a million errands, and now I'm enjoying Wifi and a Chocolate Chip Frolatte at Saxby's. I have so enjoyed my day off, but I'm really looking forward to seeing my little booger when I get home soon.

{you had me at "balloon"}

Add balloons to Kate's list of favorite things (which already included dogs and fans).
When I pointed out that Goodnight Moon has a balloon on several pages, she was hooked. I think we read this book about 50 times tonight, and Kate excitedly pointed to the balloon throughout. I wish now I had taken some video of her yelling "boon" (translation: balloon) again and again and again. I think we have yet another favorite book!

{tiptoeing through the tulips}
Nick's parents are in town this weekend, so we drove down to the Arboretum to see the "Dallas Blooms" tulips. Everything was gorgeous, but the trip didn't turn out to be the photo op I was hoping for; Kate was running all over the place, and it is getting harder and harder for me to keep up with her!

One reason I chose this pic is so you can admire Kate's hair growth there in the back! It shone so brightly blonde in the sunshine today.

{Lens Baby: "At the Beach"}
Today Kate and I met up with our LB group at the Village of Fairview's new beach area. It was SO much fun! It was basically a sand playground with lots of mini beach chairs and sand toys. Kate really enjoyed it, and since she was well-contained, I didn't feel like I was chasing her the whole time.

We headed over to the splash pad for a few minutes before leaving. She ran up to the area and started clapping, but when the water shot up right next to her, she panicked and ran back to me. It continued like this - running up to the scene and clapping, then running back to me when the water got a little close. So cute! Hopefully she'll get a little braver with more exposure.

We'll definitely be back to this area!

Enjoy a few more shots of sweet Kate at the "beach..."

{new swimmy}
Swimsuit shopping for a baby is actually fun! Here's the one "we" picked out.
By the way, this is the grass that Nick recently barbequed. Look how lush and green it's coming in! :)

And here's Kate at the Gymboree outlet... Unfortunately, she already has an eye for the bikinis.

{Lens Baby: Farmersville Park}
Kate and I met a couple other LB moms over at a park in Farmersville this morning. I'd never been over there, but we enjoyed the drive, the cute park, and the downtown area.

a couple more...

{fan of fans}
taken w/ iPhone & Instagram app
Kate and I ran to Lowe's today, and while I was looking at the lamps, Kate started going berserk - rocking in the cart and jabbering away. It took me a second to realize what was so exciting, but then I saw them... all those fans. Kate's been fan-crazed the last few days, asking "what's this?" every time she looks up. Not sure what the fascination is, but I think we've found a new "cool" spot!

3.21.2011

{best pals?}
As I've shared before, Kate adores Kirby. We need to work on the "pat gently" concept, though. Kate frequently takes both hands, grabs Kirby's hair, and pulls as hard as she can. Kirby just sits there and takes it. Sometimes she'll relocate if she's had enough.
Here, Kate has her hand IN Kirby's mouth, and still, Kirby is so gentle.

3.20.2011

The three of us (four if you count the somersaulting Caroline in my belly) took advantage of the gorgeous Sunday weather by playing at the park.

Kate loves the freedom of being outside and running around... like a dog off-leash!

Kate's favorite activity was going UP and DOWN the stairs. (She's not allowed to do this on her stairs at home, so it was extra fun!)

 Almost to the top (again).

Peeking through the side panel.

And UP again.

Taking the slide DOWN this time.

Did you know Kate's obsessed with dogs? She loves to say "da" or "dada" for "dog" ALL. THE. TIME. Gets a little confusing when she means "Daddy!" She got super excited every time she saw a dog at the park today. She went tearing off after this couple and their dogs. Look at her arm outstretched... "DA! DA!" I wish you could have seen how fast she tried to chase them down. So cute!

Having fun walking on the picnic table back and forth. I think I asked her to show me her teeth here.

When we got home, Kate tried her first (soy) ice cream treat. She wasn't so sure about how cold it was at first, but soon decided she loved it and was covered in sticky orange dreamsicle goop. Love.
{first day of spring}
We celebrated the season's change with a trip to the park. More pics to follow in next post.

Compare to last year's first day of spring and a two month old Kate...

3.19.2011

Tonight we had our church life group over for a barbeque supper. We enjoyed gorgeous weather and fun fellowship. I took only a handful of pictures, and this is the one that turned out halfway decent! Kate was poured into her size 18 month clothes I just ordered. Looks like they'll be going in the "outgrown" bin a little soon.

3.18.2011

{march MADNESS}
Nick took off work yesterday and today to enjoy the opening weekend of March Madness. Yes, there are TWO TVs set up in our living room right now to increase game viewing.
Well, all our cheering didn't help the Ags today. There goes my bracket! (Yes, I, the loyal A&M fan, picked the Ags to go all the way.)

Lens Baby: Vintage Cameras
Kate and I met up for another fun play date with our Lens Baby friends today. The theme was "vintage cameras." Kate really enjoyed playing with my Brownie Starflex camera, but this bottle of Coke was a hit, too!

Here are a few more pictures from our get-together...

3.16.2011

{Kate playing peekaboo in the car with her blankie}
Can you believe this was the ONLY picture I took today?
(taken w/ my iPhone & the Instagram app)
Here are the rest of the photos from yesterday's Lens Baby event, "Garden Party." Kate was bribed with pinwheels and special dairy-free sugar cookies, so they are in almost every shot! Everyone brought neat props to share, but Kate's not old enough to take direction like "stay here on this picnic blanket," so I mostly just followed her with my camera as she explored the nature preserve. We both had a great time!

Lens Baby: Garden Party
Kate and I met our Lens Baby friends today at the nature preserve for a "garden party" themed shoot. I'll work on getting more pics from our afternoon posted soon.

"iss??"
Kate's latest craze... holding things up and asking, "iss??" (Translation: "What is this?") It's a flower, Kate!

3.13.2011

Getting the monthly elephant pose was really hard today. As you can see, Kate had a blast jumping on the chair!
Thank goodness Daddy was home to help, because I definitely couldn't have done this on my own.

Dear Kate,

You are 14 months old today! You sure seem like you've grown up a lot over the past month. It's becoming more and more apparent what a little sponge you are; you show new evidences everyday that you understand us in a myriad of ways. It shouldn't come as a shock, I guess, but you amaze us each day with your new learning.

Here's what's been going on...

* You started clapping this past month. You clap when I'm done singing you a song (thank you very much), and you clap along with TV audiences, too. You love for us to cheer for you, and you get a huge grin and clap for yourself right along with us.

* Lately you've been exploring how things work together by taking lids off of things and trying to put them back on, playing with stacking cups, and setting your milk in the proper spot on your highchair tray.

* You have developed into a pretty good eater. (I can't believe I'm saying that!) It seems to me like you eat A LOT, but then again, you're a really active toddler. You enjoy feeding yourself, and I've figured out a few tricks to spoon feed you, too; it helps if you have something you're playing with while I sneak the bites in. (You still eat a variety of baby food veggies, and I give you a soy or coconut milk yogurt every day.) You are doing okay drinking about one sippy cup's worth of soy milk throughout the day. I sneak in another 4 ounces into your morning cereal, and you still get one bottle (10 ounces or so) before bath time and bed.

* Your favorite food is blueberries. You get so excited when you see them! They're a great tool for calming you down when you're cranky. Mama has a few tricks up her sleeve for those emergencies!

* You're attempting lots of words. Here are the ones that we can make out: love, boom, bear, dog, Dada, what's this, this, and yes. Your first word (besides Dada) was "love," I think.  At the end of your book, Daddy Hugs (Katz), it says "I love you" ten times. We always say it really fast, and you LOVE this page. You started repeating "love" with us. What a way to warm your mama's heart!

* Speaking of books, you love bringing a book over to me and sitting in my lap to read. I can even start quoting from one of your favorites, and you'll go find that particular book out of the basket and bring it to me. What a shocker that was when you did it the first time! As we're reading, you like to skip pages to get to your favorite parts more quickly.

* This was another shocker. You understand the words 'breakfast', 'lunch', 'supper', 'hungry' and 'eat'. Anytime we say one of these words (even in isolation), and you're hungry, you run to the kitchen gate, and then in to your highchair. Hilarious!

* When you hear 'teeth,' you start chomping yours. You love your tooth brush, and you're really cute when you try to brush your own teeth.

* Your favorite sound right now is "ssssss." Whenever I use hairspray, you mimic the sound of the aerosol by repeating "ssssss." Too funny! Also, whenever we ask you to say words that have an S anywhere in the word, you just say "sssss." (For example, we say "say socks," and you say, "ssssss.") You're trying!

* Discipline has been a little tougher. You don't like that "no" word, yet you sure like to test your boundaries after you hear it! The kicker is when you look to see if I'm watching you before you commit the infraction. We do a quick 30 second time out in the pack-n-play for certain things we know you know are wrong. Hopefully with consistency, you'll start to understand this consequence. This discipline thing is sure tough with a one year old. (I guess it'll never get any easier, really!)

You are at such a fun, cute age. I love being your mama.

Love you,
Mama and Daddy

I finally uploaded new pictures to the digital frame and plugged it in again. Kate is obsessed with it, and when she's upset, it calms her down to go watch the frame as I name the people in the pictures.

Here are a couple more pics from our stop at the Austin Arboretum. I still need to go through all of these and post them to Flickr!

{gardening}
Kate "helped" Daddy replant the garden. Really, she just ate dirt.

{our girls}
Kate adores Kirby.
Kirby tolerates Kate (even when Kate is climbing on top of her).
Good girl, Kirby. Good girl.

new shoes
I'm so excited for spring! Kate's has some sweet new dresses and play clothes, and now she has new shoes, too! I'm looking forward to consistently warm weather so we can put the winter things away.

Here's Kate giving her new shoes a trial run. She was thorough in her testing!
